AQUAPOLLIS+

Aquaculture of the stalked barnacle (Pollicipes pollicipes)

June 2016 to December 2019

Project reference: ALT20-03-0145-FEDER-000003

Stalked barnacles of the genus Pollicipes have several features that give them a high potential interest for aquaculture (e.g. high commercial value; exploitation activity dangerous and dependent on sea condition; high potential to export to Spain; state of the resource with a negative tendency in Portugal). However, cases of success of aquaculture of Pollicipes are unknown. In a past project (AQUAPOLLIS), a cultivation system of Pollicipes was tested and despite very promising results, several problems have arisen, namely due to fouling.

Complementary to AQUAPOLLIS and in order to solve these problems, AQUAPOLLIS+ is testing three alternative systems of cultivation:

1)system already tested in project AQUAPOLLIS in which the grow-out of juveniles is in the marine environment (a floating platform located in the Port of Sines), but with modifications in order to minimize fouling problems;

  1. 2)system in which the grow-out of juveniles will be in captivity;

3) system in which the grow-out of juveniles will be temporary in the marine environment and in captivity) and analyse the biological and economic viability of these systems.
